Film Archives on Line: Its History, Its Aims

Film Archive on Line (FAOL) was conceived and designed in 1997 as the final step of a long history of projects carried out by the GAMMA Group in order to provide film archivists, film scholars and film lovers some useful tools for training in the film preservation/restoration field.

A flexible, comprehensive, easy to update tool was needed, as well as a meeting point where film restorers, professionals and an ever-growing world of film scholars, film students and – in a broader sense – film lovers could come to find information, to be trained in film preservation/restoration, to find answers to their questions or simply to exchange and confront their experiences and problems. So, a complex project, including the creation of a Web site, the production of CD-Rom-based training materials, the implementation of tutorship to help the trainees in their work, was submitted to European Union and obtained the approval and a grant from the LEONARDO Project.

What you can find within FAOL various sections and activities is a “summary” of technical and methodological knowledge on film preservation and restoration theory, techniques and practices. What is not to be seen, behind the mass of information that is finally, for the first time, made available; is a group of experts in film restoration and in training in this field, who contributed to FAOL production.

What you can find, if you will start your navigation within FAOL structure is a huge amount of information, which is designed to be regularly updated and completed. All information and data are arranged in such a way and following such a structure that will allow the users to select and pick up the amount of information they really need. All topics and all aspects of film preservation and restoration are dealt in various levels of specialisation, ranging from a very basic information meant someone who is seeking general ideas on a certain topic, to highly specialised sections designed to make it possible for an already skilled professional to carry out difficult and complex tasks.

Following the links that you find in this page, you can check some “instructions for use” that will allow you to find your way – with the best results – through FAOL structure. And you can also have a first overview on the world of film conservation, preservation and restoration, on its aims and problems, ethical and methodological issues, technical challenges and solutions, its function and its fast-growing importance and role in the modern audiovisual world.
